Protect our benefits
The Government is proposing changes to the welfare system that will make it harder to qualify for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and reduce the rates of UC (Universal Credit) health payments. Hundreds of thousands of autistic people across the UK rely on these vital benefits to support them in daily life if they cannot work, or to cover the cost of adjustments that make working possible, for example accessible transport to and from work. These changes could disproportionately impact autistic people both in and out of work. Plus, the Government is trying to push them through without consulting on the most harmful proposals.
Can you help us to campaign against these unfair and harmful proposals by getting in touch with your MP?
The Government’s proposals will mean that as well as getting a certain number of points across all assessment categories, people will also have to score higher in specific categories. This change could mean fewer autistic people will get PIP at all, because the type of support they often need in many parts of their daily lives (like being reminded or prompted to do things) score lower in the assessment.
Even worse, because of other proposals, autistic people who are not in work will also lose a large part of their out-of-work benefits due to this change.

Autistic people already bear the brunt of the barriers disabled people experience in getting into work. Just three in 10 autistic people are employed. We’ve been calling for more support for autistic jobseekers for years, but the Government’s own employment reforms will not even be in place before the benefits are removed.
We need the Government to rethink and listen to autistic people about the impact this could have on their lives. Will you contact your MP and ask them to protect our benefits?
